3 stars – an entertaining experiment

It has to be clear: this is an experiment, or a historical reconstruction of an event out of time. Under such premises, Alessandro Burbank starts his solo show and establishes a peculiar relationship with the audience, who has decisional power on the development of action on stage.
Since his entrance, the author-performer breaks the illusion that we are going to witness a traditional play. He addresses the audience as an improvising stand-up comedian, or as a very charismatic classmate. Spectators are exhorted to walk on stage at any time and pop a snack package open near the microphone. In this way, it is to the audience to decide when to switch to one section of the show to the next.
Food is the main topic of all sections. Throughout poetry readings and live video game playing, along with many other fun events that involve the audience in different ways and to different degrees, the show grows into an entertaining and ironic conglomerate of scenes. Thanks to the intimate atmosphere of Cubo Teatro, some spectators felt free to talk to the performer at moments that would have been considered intrusive in a more traditional show. It was a feeling similar to sitting in a classroom during an hour of substitution.
With his playful and extravagant storytelling, Alessandro Burbank touches to serious topics such as fat-shaming, fatphobia, and ADHD, in a light-hearted yet committed way.
Il Mangiautore is produced by Cubo Teatro and Più Ci Penso APS, in collaboration with ARCI Torino, and presented in the context of the fifth edition NUDI of Fertili Terreni Teatro festival.

Che sia chiaro: questo è un esperimento, una ricostruzione storica di un evento senza tempo. Con queste premesse, Alessandro Burbank dà inizio al suo spettacolo e instaura una relazione molto speciale con il pubblico, a cui viene conferito potere decisionale sullo sviluppo dell’azione in scena.
Fin dal suo ingresso, l’attore-autore spezza l’illusione che stiamo per assistere a uno spettacolo tradizionale. Si rivolge al pubblico come un comico che improvvisa, o come un compagno di classe molto carismatico, ed esorta gli spettatori a salire sul palco in qualunque momento per far scoppiare una merendina vicino al microfono. Così facendo, spetta al pubblico decidere quando passare da una parte dello spettacolo alla successiva.
Il cibo è il tema principale di tutta la performance. Tra letture di poesie e sessioni di videogiochi live, insieme a molti altri eventi esilaranti che coinvolgono il pubblico in vari modi, lo spettacolo si sviluppa in un agglomerato di scene divertenti e ironiche. Grazie all’atmosfera raccolta del Cubo Teatro, alcuni spettatori si sono sentiti liberi di parlare all’attore in un modo che sarebbe stato considerato intrusivo in qualunque spettacolo di tipo più tradizionale. In questi momenti ho avuto l’impressione di essere di nuovo a scuola, nell’ora di supplenza.
Con il suo modo estroso e giocoso di raccontare storie, Alessandro Burbank si avvicina ad argomenti seri, quali fat-shaming, grassofobia e ADHD, allo stesso tempo con leggerezza e con impegno.
