Wendy, My Darling

Wendy, My Darling

Seen at Edinburgh Festival Fringe on the 9th of August 2023

4 stars – brilliant, fun and inspiring

Wendy is a mother in a lineage of Wendys, each falling in love with her own Peter Pan. This Wendy is a script writer going through an artistic crisis, subdued to the requests of her Hollywood agent – until she rediscovers her Happy Thought.

After the first few minutes of settling down, April Wish (the author and actress) wins the audience with jokes and guides them into her story. Her brilliant writing combines all elements with a very smart composition, as the famous tale becomes a springboard for feminist considerations on the role girls are expected to grow in, the responsibilities they are supposed to take, while boys are allowed to stay irresponsible longer.

The text is never rhetoric, and it addresses central questions in a very original and effective way. Krysia Plonka’s direction make it run smoothly and effectively. Some minor imperfections do not harm the enjoyability of the show. Original music by Tammy Glover adds more magic to the show by building an atmosphere between fairy tale and reality, the reality we fantasize and the fairy tales we chase.
