⭐⭐⭐⭐ – a boisterous stand-up comic to watch

Jess Fuchs is a natural comedic talent: she’s got the timing, the quick wit, the self awareness, and the ability to turn anything into material. The 32-year-old Aussie stand-up comic immediately commands the room in a warm, hilarious and unpretentious way, making it impossible not to like her. Her sense of humour is deadpan, direct and laden with self-deprecation, but without the underlying darkness it could sometimes masquerade. She’s shallow by choice, confident about her insecurities, great at observations and not for a second mawkish.

During her set, Fuchs admits to a lot of things: being jealous of tradwives because she, too, doesn’t want to work; not being able to read because she has dyslexia; not being able to pronounce Irish names even after an eventful trip to Ireland; having a weird at best time dating men; relating to the Titanic. Her crowd work is effortlessly sharp too: she locates an Irish couple and gets them to pronounce the name of the town with the Titanic museum she visits every time during her telling of the story, mastering callbacks. She also doesn’t shy away from body-image-related jokes nor those veering on the slightly problematic (e.g. wanting to get ‘fingered’ by a male gynaecologist). The voluminous black feathered dress and thick Australian accent only add to the persona she brings onstage.

Fuchs doesn’t aim at a moral ending to the story, or a spiritual take-home message; if anything, she laughs about her ‘woo-woo’ friend interpreting everything as a sign and maintains her baseline cynicism. What she does do is deliver an amusing hour of down to earth silly comedy and that’s it; slaying in her lane while she’s at it.
