4 stars – queer absurdist dark comedy AKA such a strange, funny play
Like the title promises. Patrick and Claire are still wearing accessories from their wedding ceremony and are driving to Niagara Falls for their honeymoon. It’s late, it’s dark, they are tired, and the car ends up in a ditch, not before having hit something. What happens next is all to be discovered.
What a ride in the few square meters of forest bordering the highway. The body is laying there, the car is stuck and Patrick and Claire have a very bad omen on their marriage. Tension starts rising, what is absurd becomes even more absurd, couple dynamics become paradoxical (or have they always been?)… This, plus timely and effective delivery, is excellent cure against any bad mood.
UR MEAN KATHLEEN theatre company, on top of loving naming things weirdly, is a very fortunate group of talented young people. They mock their own generation at the same time as every other one, they know where they stand and they seem to have some very valid, very queer answers to those questions that have been there forever. Kit Colacito (the body/Meghan), Joey D’Amore (Patrick), August Kiss Fegley (Claire) maintain great comedic timing and deliver quirky, often campy performances, ensuring that none of the laughs are missed.
The Body I Left in Susquehanna National Forest is a fun, dark comedy directed by Katie Kunkel and written by Tom Quackenbush. Highly enjoyable. Unlike the newlyweds, you won’t have any regrets.
