5 stars – funny, lovable human monster

You will never see such a funny and lovable monster, I promise. And if I don’t keep my promise – well, you’ll have to let me know, because I want to check with my own eyes.

Merging physical theatre and clown technique, New Zealand theatre maker Micheal Hockey crafts an unforgettable character. He leans into the imaginary of the Frankenstein’s monster enough for the character to feel true, and then gradually enriches him in a way that renders the performance utterly unique. Alanna Hall plays the electric guitar on stage and dialogues both with the monster and with the audience in new and clever ways, becoming a fundamental part of this nonverbal show.

Micheal Hockey’s physical performance is as sound as it could be (which is all the more impressive considering the wide, clumsy movements of the monster in relation to the size of the teeny tiny stage of this venue). Nonetheless, proximity with the spectators also contributes to creating humorous circumstances, and it certainly plays a role in the contamination of a sense of humanity that is underway. Playing with the monster’s irresistible mimics, the performer maintains an uninterrupted and generous connection with the audience, building a rare feeling of trust and complicity. Meanwhile, a sweet plot unrolls on the bare stage, with musical accompaniment and a few essential props.

Watch the monster become more and more human. For literally anyone over 12 who enjoys some (high quality) playfulness.
