4 stars – beautifully built

Olivia is a model who poses for famous painters. After a fight with one of them, she meets Paul, a kind, unknown artist who offers her help and who would like to paint her. This is a fresh start for both of them, but their relationship soon becomes complicated.

This play is beautifully co-written and co-directed by Diana Feng, Tegan Verheul and Clarisse Zamba of Wednesday Women’s Writing Collective. The plot is inspired in the figure of the artist Fernande Olivier, Picasso’s muse. Themes of classical feminism emerge as Olivia has to fight for her status as an artist and against traditional visions of the role of a woman in a couple.

The show is presented as a live drawing session: every audience member is given a sheet and a pencil and is invited to draw at any moment. Caterina Grosoli delivers a captivating performance in the role of Olivia. Sushant Shekhar is the shy but traditional Paul, and Luke Oliver effectively plays Leith and Roberto. The stage setting is beautiful and functional, building the frame for all the aesthetic images that are brought to life in it. Lights and projection effects enrich the performance in the right moments.
