Fool’s Gold

Seen at Edinburgh Festival Fringe on the 11th of August 2023

4 stars – ensnaring (for spectators and magpies)

A solo show about money, but on stage are four characters… Or four ‘instances’ of the same persona. And many questions, among which: what does inequality mean in our society?

This piece of political theatre blends conference-like moments with physical theatre and pushes the audience to critically think about wealth. It is not overloaded with data, but the narrative sometimes turns out weakened by the switch from the ‘lecture’ to the adventures of the inner characters.

Saskia Solomons is a stunning performer: they dominate the techniques of physical theatre in an incredible manner. They are magnetic, shifting from a character to the next, and having extreme, moving care of their characters. They shape the space around them and populate it with no help from music or props, and an essential use of lights.

Even if I didn’t feel the two souls of the show completely melt together, it is a highly valuable performance that deserves attention.
