Bye Bye Baby

Seen by Federica at Edinburgh Festival Fringe on the 13th of August 2024

4 stars – irony and high stakes

Julia and Dan are splitting up, and every day they step into the divorce office and sit next to their lawyers, Samantha and Katherine. New details of their story emerge through each dialogue, together with hints about how their relationships have evolved in time. In particular, Sam is a common friend, but she is defending Julia against Dan; the fights over more or less meaningful objects uncover a    universe of contrasting personalities.

Each of the four characters is a force that has the power to tear the narrative apart. They are all very well written, with their particular humour and, as the show moves on, with their more and more evident flaws. The high level of individualisation of the characters is also reached through the collective work of the four actors-creators, Lizzy Thistlethwayte, Clementine McNair Scott, Poppy Scales and Seamus Casey, who identified in their character at the same time as they were writing them.

This dark comedy by On the brink productions is a very fun piece, where especially the female characters are allowed space and great complexity. A narrative that is like a bomb, that keeps you on your toes to know when it will blow up.
