2 stars – accidentally weak
The theatre company Studio 212 wants to stage a new version of the 1944 noir movie Double Indemnity, with a queer, feminist and antiracist take on it. But on the day of castings, a disruptive element appears. It’s Piper, a woman who looks quite like the femme fatale from the movie, and who aspires at playing her a little too strongly.
In spite of this strong, captivating plot, this show created by students at California State University Fullerton doesn’t reach the wished heights. The first part is more solidly built, especially in terms of characters and of acting. Sadly, as the 75-minute play goes on, it becomes weaker and weaker.
The company director, interpreted by Christian De La Torre, carries a huge responsibility but is not convincing. A praise goes to Keasha Fuller, Hannah Hart, Owen DiSciullo, and Paige Ragan, who delivered engaging performances, bringing on the rhythm of the play. Unfortunately, characters are unbalanced, and it is not possible to see much of the rest of the cast, Alexandra Rubio, Priscilla Briggs, Heather Buckler, and Jose Hernandez.
There are interesting elements in the choice of codes and other devices, but the plot doesn’t live up to the created expectations and the writing is problematic in some points, where it speeds up in key, character-changing points.
This production of devised theatre has potential, but it does not reach the level that it suggests to be aiming for. I wish these young comedians the best for their careers, and that they can learn from each project they are involved into.
