Tales of Vomit, Trash and Broken Glass

Tales of Vomit, Trash, and Broken Glass

Seen at Edinburgh Festival Fringe on the 13th of August 2022

3 stars – dystopian episodes

The planet is collapsing, and humanity will disappear. In this dystopian play, three episodes are presented, where couples of the remaining humans have to struggle to keep being alive – and to keep their sanity. The question that looms over every scene seems to be the following: how do we cope with the end?

Cosette Bolt and Nathan Samuel Young play the three scenes in an interesting setting which is punk and somewhat futuristic at the same time. Grace Baker’s direction stresses the intimate difficulties the characters face, while elevating the essential meaning of relationships in the apocalyptic context, focusing on the struggles to keep a connection.

The biggest difficulty of this play is its structure: despite the ‘tales’ in the title, similarities are very strong among each episode, but it is unclear if the spectator is supposed to grasp some meaning in the association or if they should be read independently. A lack of clarity in the reading key of the play is sadly a detriment for the enjoyment of the whole show.
