4 Stars – surprising creation
A date, a lie. What are the borders of respect when you just get to know someone – unsuspecting that this relationship will grow – and you have an instinct to please? What does the seed of that lie bring? How are power-relationships shaped, and how are they to change? All along this time, Nature – a stranger, all-powerful force – is creeping her way in.
SAP melts inspiration from Nature and mythology into a contemporary situation, in a pleasantly seamless flow. Raffaella Marcus’s debut text is clever in its way of creating situations (simple only in appearance) and of exploring feelings. Something reminding Classical mythology and theatre is present not only in the evocation of Daphne’s myth, but also in the way characters are interlocked and the drama is one based on knowledge instead of action.
Jessica Clark’s interpretation of ‘Daphne’ allows to trust her in placing the point of view of the story in her hands, as Rebecca Benatvala gives life to three different characters in a mesmerising way. Jessica Lazar chooses to set the play in an empty space, which seems to effortlessly come alive thanks to the dynamism of her direction.
This very surprising play, produced by Atticist and Ellie Keel Productions, holds together firmly, deprived of weak spots.
