Winner of Umbilicus Contest 2022

Greyscapes is a play about cities, about living in our contemporary societies, and the possibility, or impossibility, of communication. Lines might or might not be connected to other lines, in a human attempt at reaching out that goes beyond the individual segregation operated by the urban architecture and lifestyle.

This experimental play stems from research and personal experience on ways of living in different places, from travelling, meeting people, and conceiving alternative ways of co-living. It also derives from the impulse towards true communication.

“Le città di mare dispiegano spesso una pletora di colori. Ogni facciata è vestita a festa per l’uomo che è andato per mare. Appena la nave sarà arrivata in prossimità della costa, di quel tanto che basta a distinguere le macchie dei colori, ogni marinaio saprà dove sono il suo letto, la sua tavola e la donna che l’ha apparecchiata e che la ingombrerà di vivande tenute in caldo.”

“Grigio è il colore delle città dell’interno. Le città industrializzate, cresciute a grande velocità, pareti di edifici che lo smog ha dipinto secondo le sue sfumature. Un dettaglio grigio rossastro come unica concessione non all’estetica, ma a una gabola del bando comunale in favore delle zone residenziali. Un dettaglio grigio giallastro serve a distinguere un numero civico dall’altro in un complesso edilizio a progettazione modulare.“

Four characters are enclosed in their portions of space. They have some personal features but their stories and personalities are willingly blurred. Their agency is restricted to the space that has been assigned to them, where they feel safe and comfortable.

Stories, personal or tale-like, emerge in an atmosphere made of disconnected words, that might occasionally resemble poetry. Nature is only present in her dead form. It is to one of the characters to keep searching, to collect hope in improbable places, and to enact it.

The winner of Umbilicus Context 2022 (artistic directors Lauro Versari and Federico Vigorito), Greyscapes was presented in the closing night of the Umbilicus Context festival on the 13th of January 2023, in the Teatro della Visitazione in Rome.
