4 stars – Joyful journey

This electric queer cabaret takes the shape of a journey at sea. Each performer has a story to tell, a song to sing, and all is done in a spirit that is at the same time careless and sweetly caring.

The main theme that connects each section is gender euphoria and what it is that makes a person feel good in their body. In this show written by William Duignan and Ania Upstill, and directed by the latter, the songs and gags are engaging, sometimes including audience participation in a way that makes the audience feel welcomed.

Each performer (Ania Upstill, Evan Michael Smith*, Felix Crossley-Pritchard, William Duignan) has their moment, on top of the harmonious collaboration among them. The work of Butch Mermaid Productions is joyful and fundamental. They are building a queer space, one show at a time.
